PRESIDENT LUNGU MEETS ELECTION OBSERVER MISSIONS

HIS EXCELLENCY Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu President of the Republic of Zambia this morning met leaders of Election Observer missions and Special Envoy of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at State House in separate meetings.
The President met former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and leader of the African Union (AU) Observer Mission, His Excellency Mr. Goodluck Jonathan, and Special Envoy of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Professor Ibrahim Gambari who is also Special Advisor on Political Dialogue for the Commonwealth.
The Head of State also met former President of the Republic of Mauritius and leader of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) Observer Mission His Excellency Mr. Cassam Uteem, and Chief Observer for the European Union (EU) Observer Mission Hon. Cecile Kashetu Kyenge.
His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan expressed full confidence that the elections which will be held this Thursday on 11th August, 2016 will be free and fair and that Zambia will maintain its highly reputable brand as a viable democracy. Mr. Jonathan urged all political parties taking part in the elections to accept the outcome.
Special Envoy of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Professor Ibrahim Gambari who is also Special Advisor on Political Dialogue for the Commonwealth commended President Lungu for the statesmanship that he has demonstrated during election campaigns.
Professor Gambari expressed confidence that Zambia will emerge out of this week’s elections as a peaceful and stable nation she has always been.
The Head of State also held an open and frank conversation with EU observers led by Hon. Kyenge.
The President assured EU observers that the opposition were free to campaign anywhere they wanted, and that access to the media was a matter for independent media boards and editorial teams.
Former President of the Republic of Mauritius and leader of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) Observer Mission His Excellency Mr. Cassam Uteem also commended Zambia for its peaceful character and urged all participating political parties to be prepared to accept the outcome of the polls.
